On January 9th, fiber artists of all kinds gathered for Orlando Distaff Day. They enjoyed a wonderful day of networking, idea sharing, and friendship – and donated 132 items to the Warmies Project as well as a trunk full of food for the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida!
Mark your calendars for this free-to-attend event on January 7, 2017, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Bring a project or just come enjoy the day with other fiber artists. There are vendors, a “free” table, activities, gift exchange, demonstrations, and more. It is a great place to exchange ideas with other fiber artists and to find discounted, unique supplies.
Bring a snack food to share – there is always a pot-luck buffet of yum to enjoy!

Spinning Beautiful Threads of Kindness!
In addition to creating a wonderful community event that inspires and connects artists, they also make a difference for those in need.
We are grateful to the generous organizers and attendees of Distaff Day for always thinking of others and seeking ways to make a positive impact. They invite us every year so that attendees can learn about BE. Orlando’s Warmies Project and donate beautiful, hand-made items to help warm up cold folks. They also donate their left-over sodas and other items to the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, and invite their members to bring non-perishable food donations to the event.
VOLUNTEER WITH US!
Volunteer with us at the Warmies Table (anyone) to collect and organize donations or to help with food donation delivery to the Coalition (organizer/host level member only). Or just come to the event to enjoy the day – stop by the Warmies table and say a warm hello! RSVP on our event calendar or email BEOrlando@live.com for more information. RSVP needed for BE. volunteers only – this event is free and open to the public.
From the Distaff Day Website:

Whether you are a knitter, spinner, crocheter, weaver, or any other type of fiber artist this event is for you!
Bring along your project bag and spend the day with like-minded people. You will have plenty of time to socialize and discuss methods, techniques, ask questions, relax, and most importantly, have fun!
Wait – what the heck is Distaff Day??
A distaff, also called a roc, is a tool used in spinning to keep unspun fibers from tangling. It is also used as a connotatively demeaning adjective to indicate feminine duties, or something concerning females. This comes from the distaff tool symbolizing the domestic life or “women’s work”. It can also mean the female bloodline of the family.
Saint Distaff’s Day is an unofficial Catholic holiday on January 7th, the day after the epiphany, and many fiber artists around the world celebrate this day by hosting St. Distaff Day gatherings. Traditionally, it was a recognition that women would resume their household duties following the 12 days of Christmas. The more contemporary celebration is a secular event bringing diverse fiber artists together for community and sharing.
From Hesperides, a collection of poems by Robert Herrick:
Partly work and partly play
You must on St. Distaffs Day:
From the plough soon free your team;
Then cane home and fother them:
If the maids a-spinning go,
Burn the flax and fire the tow.
Bring in pails of water then,
Let the maids bewash the men.
Give St. Distaff’ all the right:
Then bid Christmas sport good night,
And next morrow every one
To his own vocation.
